Continued training and competition ban!!
Message from ÍSÍ
A press conference has just concluded at Harpa, where the Minister of Health announced stricter measures in disease control from midnight until November 17th. The measures are based on the recommendations of the Chief Epidemiologist, as stated in the Minister of Health's regulation from today. Sports, including training and competition, for children and adults, whether indoors or outdoors, with or without contact, are prohibited. Individual training, without contact, is permitted, such as outdoor running and similar exercise. Swimming pools will also be closed during the same period. The regulation also states that the Minister may grant exemptions for individual sporting events such as international competitive games.
Crowd restrictions will be reduced from 20 people to 10 people. Only children born in 2015 and younger are exempt from the 2-meter rule, crowd restrictions, and mask requirement.
The above measures are being taken in the wake of increased infections in the community and cluster infections that have occurred in the capital area and elsewhere. The country's healthcare system is under enormous strain these days, and Landspítali has reached an emergency level. The measures are aimed, among other things, at reducing the strain so that the healthcare system can meet the conditions that have arisen during the epidemic.
"In recent months, the sports movement has been either on the defensive or on the offensive, and today we once again need to grit our teeth and weather the storm. It is difficult to have to abandon plans for further opening up of sports activities and instead look forward to the closure of all sports activities.".
The sports movement is an incredible movement. It has performed brilliantly in the difficult environment it has been living in over the past few months. I encourage everyone involved in sports to continue to show the patience and resilience that will serve us well in the fight against the virus. We need, despite pandemic fatigue, to continue to cultivate the initiative and imagination that the movement has shown when it comes to meeting the challenges we face each time.
We all need to protect sports in the country and be aware of the importance of sports, especially in times like these. Good health is the best prevention against the coronavirus as well as many other diseases.
"Let's encourage each other, show consideration, solidarity and responsible behavior," said Lárus L. Blöndal, President of ÍSÍ, upon the publication of the new regulation today.
